White Salt Patches: Efflorescence Explained

The white powder on your wall is dissolved salt left behind by moving water — a message, not a stain. What it says, how to remove it, and why brushing alone never ends it.

Efflorescence is water's signature: moisture moved through the masonry, dissolved its salts, evaporated at the surface and left them as white bloom. The powder itself is harmless. The message is not — somewhere, water is passing through your wall, and it will keep signing until stopped.

Reading the bloom

  • A rising tide line in the lowest metre: ground moisture climbing — rising damp territory (the separation).
  • Around a defined patch higher up: localised seepage — trace the outside source (the method).
  • On a parapet or boundary wall top: rain entering the uncapped top and drying out of the faces — coping failure (why copings matter).
  • On new construction in its first year: construction moisture leaving — the one benign case, which passes as the build dries.

Removing what is there

Dry-brush with a stiff (not wire) brush and collect the powder. Stubborn crystals: a barely damp wipe after brushing — sparingly, since washing is more water into a wall complaining about water. Acid washes belong to hard masonry cleaning by people who know them, and never near marble-based finishes, which acid etches.

Ending it

  1. Find and stop the water — the whole cure. Source-tracing by pattern above; treatment per cause: sealing, coping, drainage, or damp-course measures (by cause).
  2. Let the wall dry through and finish exhaling. Bloom may briefly continue as stored salt exits — brushing it off a drying wall is progress, not failure.
  3. Repair contaminated plaster where salt has made it soft or powdery — salt-laden plaster sheds every future paint layer and comes off now or later.
  4. Redecorate only when new bloom stops appearing. Paint over active efflorescence becomes a peeling report card within months.

Frequently asked questions

Is efflorescence dangerous to the structure?

The bloom, no. Sustained water movement behind it corrodes steel and softens mortar — the messenger warns of exactly that (sign three).

Sealant over the patch stopped the powder. Solved?

Relocated. Blocked at one face, moisture exits at the next — the bloom migrates and the wall stays wet. Source first, always.
