1. Does the slab move?
Hairline crack maps say yes — exposed Indian roofs almost always do (cause one). Movement wants elastic chemistry: acrylic or flexible polymer systems that stretch over reopening hairlines.
2. Is it walked on?
A used terrace needs a coating that tolerates traffic or a wearing layer over the membrane (terrace discipline); an unused slab frees the choice.
3. Does water stand?
Ponding zones punish coatings and void careless promises. Fix falls first, and favour systems rated for occasional immersion where slight ponding is incurable (cause four).
4. What is on it now?
Bare concrete takes systems directly; sound old coating constrains you to compatible chemistry; failed old coating means removal first, whatever you buy (mistake three).
