When a texture wall fails, the failure was usually decided before or during application — rarely by the material. These are the seven mistakes behind almost every complaint we are shown, with the tell-tale sign of each.
1. Laying on damp or uncured plaster
Sign: patchy discolouration and debonding within months. Fresh plaster must cure and dry through first — the reasoning is in the preparation guide.
2. Skipping or diluting the binder
Sign: the wall sheds granules when brushed. The binder chemical is the adhesive of the whole system; economising there converts stone into loose sand.
3. No primer, or primer over dust
Sign: sheets of finish separating cleanly from the wall, plaster visible behind. Adhesion never existed — the system was resting, not gripping.
4. Eyeballed mix ratios that drift batch to batch
Sign: shade bands across one wall, visible in low sun. Stone does not change colour mid-wall; mixes do. Measured ratios, batch after batch, keep one wall one colour.
5. Losing the wet edge
Sign: a vertical seam line mid-wall that no cleaning removes. A panel finished against a dried edge is a permanent joint — sessions must end at corners and breaks, as covered in the application guide.
6. Uneven trowel pressure
Sign: thickness waves that read as light-and-dark patches in raking light. This is the experience gap between applicators, and the reason to see a bidder's previous wall before hiring.
7. Decorating over an unsolved damp problem
Sign: the same damp patch returning through the new finish, now more expensively. Texture is not a waterproofing layer; water wins. Diagnose damp first — leak or dampness — treat it, then decorate.
