One of the real difficulties in buying this finish is that nobody agrees what to call it. A homeowner in Hansi asks for madrasi dana, a contractor in Pune quotes for chips paint, an architect specifies aggregate texture finish, and a shop in Chennai calls it something else again. Three quotes arrive with three different product names, and it is not obvious whether they are for the same thing.

The names you will hear
- Madrasi dana — the most widespread name in north India. Dana means grain or granule; the madrasi prefix reflects an association with the south, where the finish was widely used earlier. It says nothing about where any given batch is made — we manufacture and supply from Haryana.
- Marble dana / dana paint — the same, with the origin dropped. Common in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi NCR and Rajasthan.
- Marble chips paint / chips paint — describes the material rather than the effect. Common in western India.
- Marble texture paint — the more formal trade name, and what we list it under.
- Granules texture / granular finish — used in specifications and by architects.
- Aggregate finish / stone aggregate texture — technical framing, mostly in written specs.
- Sand texture — not the same thing. See below.
What they all describe
Graded, colour-sorted marble granules held in a binder, laid by trowel over prepared and primed plaster. The colour and the texture both come from the stone, not from a pigmented film. The full explanation is here.
Where the names genuinely differ
Two distinctions are real and worth holding on to:
- Sand texture is a different finish. Fine sand or silica in a binder gives an even, gritty, uniform surface — no visible individual grains, no light-catching. Marble dana has discrete stone particles you can see and feel. Someone quoting "texture paint" may mean either. The two compared in full.
- Grain size is a real variable within the same product. Fine, medium and coarse look substantially different on a finished wall, consume different quantities and suit different situations. Grain sizes explained. Two quotes for "madrasi dana" at different prices are often two different grades.
Comparing quotes: three questions
Cut through the naming entirely by asking each supplier the same three things:
- Is it real marble granules, or sand, or a printed effect? This separates the material class.
- What grain size, and can I see a sample of that grade? A physical sample settles more than any name. Photographs mislead about grain almost universally.
- What does the quote include? Preparation, primer, the finish, how many coats, labour? Two quotes for the same material are not comparable if one includes primer and preparation and the other does not — the usual reason quotes differ.
Three answers to those three questions tell you more than any product name will.
Why we use several names ourselves
Straightforwardly: because customers search for different ones. Someone typing "madrasi dana price" and someone typing "marble texture paint" are looking for the same product, and it would be unhelpful to list it only under one. Where a term means something genuinely different — sand texture, stone cladding, natural marble — we say so rather than blur it, because blurring those is how people end up with something they did not intend to buy.
